A passionate and caring young lady from the North West Coast of Tasmania has decided she would like to pursue further training to enable her to work as a carer in the Aged Care Services Sector.
Gabriella Simpson from Flowerdale has shared how several ACSA Workforce initiatives have enabled her to make an informed decision about starting a career in the sector.
Gabriella attended an ACSA Employment Information Session where she had the opportunity to listen to presentations from various stakeholders in the sector. Among the presenters were management staff from residential care facilities, Registered Training Organisations, as well as employees across various job roles including extended care assistants, leisure and lifestyle, hospitality and community-based workers.
One presenter Bonnie Saunders, (pictured below) spoke to attendees about her role as a carer in a secure dementia unit, as well as reflecting on her transition into the sector and her earlier experiences in the role. Gabriella was so inspired by Bonnie, that she decided to actively pursue further training, taking advantage of ACSA’s online Introduction to Hospitality in the Aged Care Services Sector program. Gabriella was very keen to participate in the online course as it adds significant value to her application for undertaking her Certificate III training with a Registered Training Organisation.
Gabriella is now actively seeking an opportunity to complete Certificate III in Individual Support with the goal of eventually working as a carer.
Bonnie Saunders was an inspiration to Gabriella
“I started off not knowing what to do with my career, I procrastinated for months about what to do. I then went to ACSA’s Employment Information session with my mum. I learnt so much especially from a lady Bonnie, who works as a carer in a dementia ward. Bonnie told us that when one of her clients past away she had opened the window to let the spirit be free. I honestly thought that was inspiring. So then I pushed myself to do extra study with the help of my mum. I then applied for the hospitality training program for aged care through ACSA and I got in. I then decided during the program that I wanted to be a carer and now I’m pushing my myself to do the very best I can to get to the spot I want to be in”.
